What Sylvan Park is built from
A tight West Nashville grid of cottages and bungalows from the 1910s through the 1940s, on streets named for states, with Richland Creek along the western edge of the neighborhood. Small houses on small lots, low crawlspaces, original wood floors, and a good deal of recent building on the infill lots.
Dog-owning, walkable and busy. Houses are compact enough that one rug in the front room takes essentially all the traffic in the property, which is a different wear pattern from anywhere else on this route.
The Sylvan Park problem
Two things happen to rugs in Sylvan Park and neither is subtle. The first is Richland Creek, which drains a large, largely paved catchment and comes up fast: this part of Middle Tennessee can take three inches of rain in an evening, and a creek in that condition is carrying road runoff, not rainwater. A rug that took it needs decontaminating rather than drying. The second is simply concentration. In a nine-hundred-square-foot cottage, one rug absorbs the whole household — every trip in from the yard, every wet dog, every set of shoes off the pavement. Middle Tennessee soil over limestone carries a fine, hard, pale grit, and that grit does not sit on the surface. It works down to the base of the pile, lodges against the knots and cuts the fibre from below every time somebody crosses the room, which is why these rugs go thin without ever looking especially dirty.
